San Gimignano

Travelling through the lush, rolling hills of Tuscany, suddenly in the distance you see the extraordinary sight of a town perched on a hill, with 14 improbably tall thin towers. San Gimignano was originally an Etruscan village and then in the Middle Ages its most powerful families built these towers as a manifestation of their wealth. At one point there were 72 towers.

t is an enchanting place, despite the unsurprising swarms of tourists, and I loved the views of the surrounding countryside from the top of one of the towers.
