Pisa was our first significant stop in Italy. We walked through the gate to the Piazzo dei Miracolei and were stunned by our first view. Despite the cold, grey day and the hordes of fellow tourists. Nothing had prepared us for the beauty and purity of the white buildings, each magnificent in its own way.

It is a pity that the torre leans, because it should be appreciated for its elegance rather than angle. One of our most enjoyable moments was discovering the frescoes in the Camposanto. Chris’s superior knowledge of the Old Testament was useful…

Inevitably we bumped into an old friend. John Sergeant, on holiday with his partner, Penny, used to work with me writing information for citizens’ advice bureaux.
