A dedicated professional

I think I have referred several times to a fellow patient, Anita, also with a knee replacement, but in her case needed after falling downstairs. She puts up with pain and applies herself to endless hard exercises with a grim determination that is an example to all of us.

Last week she went back to Ganges to have more minor surgery. I think what they were trying to do was to stretch the tendons – or whatever holds the knee in place. (You can see that I am totally uninterested in becoming better informed on our anatomy and the the details of the surgical procedures we have undergone.)

When Anita resumed her kiné sessions on Friday, Eric, our kiné (physiotherapist) was clearly doing extremely painful manipulations to ensure she did not lose the newly acquired extended movement. It was so painful that Anita was taking oxygen during the sessions.

There is no kiné at the weekend, but I discovered yesterday that Eric came across on both Saturday and Sunday to continue giving sessions to Anita. That is a round trip of about 80 km on both his days off. Anita told me that he had said to her: “You have made such an extraordinary effort to regain the use of this knee, that I will accompany you throughout” – or words to that effect.

Am I glad I am not in Anita’s position. But am I also glad that we have the fortune in this little backwater to have an extraordinary physiotherapist. I have been to four other centres in France and this is definitely the best. That is why we put up with the lack of aide soignants and the awful food!
