Tiruvannamalai

The huge complex of the Arunachaleswara Temple at Tiruvannamalai dates back to the Cholan dynasty, though many of its features, such as the multi-coloured gopuras date from much later. Its significance is more religious than architectural: it is one of the most important places of worship for followers of Shiva. It is on the hill of Arunachala, behind the temple, that Shiva is supposed to have established his dominance over Vishnu.
